I read a book last year called "The Seven daughters of Eve" by Bryan Sykes which looks at how they can trace lineages through the mitochondria of women, and that through this they can literally map where people came from.
He even looks at where/when certain sequences appear on the continent of Europe and can trace out when people entered the continent (basically, he can see how many generations removed YOU are from anyone else on the planet).
